What an astrocartography line actually is
The straight vertical lines come first. Give the tool your birth minute; it takes each planet's apparent right ascension, subtracts Greenwich sidereal time for that instant, and lands on the longitude where the planet stood on the upper meridian — culminating, as high as it would climb. That is the MC line, the simplest object in astrocartography: one longitude, one moment. The IC line is that meridian's far half, 180 degrees away, the planet beneath your feet.
The curved lines are horizon crossings, and they curve because the horizon tilts with latitude. Degree by degree of latitude, from 89 south to 89 north, the tool solves cos H₀ = −tan(latitude) × tan(declination) — the hour angle where altitude is exactly zero — then marks it east of the meridian for rising (ASC), west for setting (DSC). Where that equation has no solution the planet is circumpolar and never touches the horizon, so astrocartography leaves the ground blank; the curves stop short of the poles instead of wrapping them.
These lines are computed in mundo: the body itself on the angle, from apparent right ascension and declination, never from its zodiac degree, which is cheaper to compute and answers a different question. That is the astrocartography convention, with a consequence worth stating plainly. A planet carrying ecliptic latitude does not match its natal Ascendant degree as it rises — the Moon can miss by five degrees. Correct geometry, not a broken map.
Concretely: say Venus stood on the upper meridian at 3° east when you were born. That Venus MC line runs down through the North Sea, past Lille and Burgundy, across the Mediterranean into Algiers, then over the Sahara toward Lagos. Its IC half sits at 177° west, almost all open Pacific.
Tradition marks about 350 km as the range in which a line is read strongly, and the city search gives the real number, not an impression: great-circle kilometres to the rising and setting curves, east-west distance to the meridians, which tightens poleward — a degree of longitude spans 111 km at the equator, only 84 km at 41 degrees north. Everything else rests on the birth minute. The angles turn a full degree every four minutes, so an hour of doubt slides every line some 15 degrees of longitude, roughly Chicago to New York. That is why astrocartography refuses a guessed time.
Using the map is simpler than reading it. The tradition treats relocation as living under an emphasis and a short visit as sampling one. Where two lines cross, two planets sit on angles at once — ground read as loud, not lucky. And the limit, plainly: a line is a change of emphasis, not a promise about outcomes. No line makes anyone rich, and a page that says otherwise is selling something.
Astrocartography, honestly explained
What is astrocartography?
A technique from the 1970s (popularized by Jim Lewis) that maps where each planet was rising, setting, culminating or anti-culminating at your birth moment. Living near a line is traditionally read as living under that planet's emphasis. It is a symbolic tradition for reflection — not an instruction to move.
Why does this map need my exact birth time?
The four angles turn with the Earth — a full degree every four minutes. An hour of uncertainty smears every line by ~15° of longitude, which is the width of a country. Rather than draw fiction, this tool asks for the real time or points you to the no-birth-time reading.
How are the lines computed?
From the real ephemeris (the same astronomy-engine computation behind every tool on this site): each planet's apparent equatorial position at your birth instant, turned into the meridian where it culminates (MC/IC) and the horizon curve where it rises or sets (ASC/DSC). The math is verified in tests against an independent horizon model.
Do I have to live ON a line to feel it?
Tradition says a line speaks loudest within roughly 350 km and fades with distance. The city search above gives you the honest number instead of a vibe — kilometres to your nearest lines, ranked.
Should I move, or is visiting enough?
The tradition treats relocation as living under a line's emphasis and travel as sampling it. Most first questions are really about a trip, which is also the cheaper test.
What happens where two lines cross?
